��ֱ�� will honor its 136 Gold Star Aggies — students and alumni who gave their lives in military service to the United States — at the university’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 23. The event, on the Memorial Union’s North Courtyard, will feature campus and guest speakers, a rendition of the national anthem and a reading of all 136 names featured in the Golden Memory Book.

Josh Chapman was appointed as the mayor of Davis in January 2024, but I’ve known him for years through his service on the Davis City Council. In the spirit of partnership, we wanted to express our commitment to maintaining the strongest possible town-gown relationship between ��ֱ�� and the city, along with sharing what you can expect in the upcoming months.

William Garrity Named University Librarian and Vice Provost of Digital Scholarship

William Garrity, deputy university librarian and the library’s chief operating officer, has been selected as the next university librarian and vice provost of digital scholarship for ��ֱ��. Garrity, who has served as interim university librarian since July 2023, will officially start on May 15.

��ֱ�� Coffee Center Opens

The Coffee Center at the University of California, Davis, officially opened Friday, May 3. The Coffee Center is a center of excellence in the ��ֱ�� College of Engineering and the first academic research and teaching facility in the U.S. entirely dedicated to the study of coffee.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion recently honored a number of students, faculty and staff for helping to bring the Principles of Community to life and make the university a more inclusive place.

The recipients of the Diversity and Principles of Community Awards, Disability Awareness Awards, Calvin Handy Leadership Award and Chancellor's Achievement Awards for Diversity and Community were honored in two separate events last month.

Renetta Tull, vice chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, congratulated the winners and offered appreciation for their work.

Chancellor Gary S. May issued the following statement today (May 6):

��ֱ�� is committed to a safe and peaceful campus environment that respects our community’s right to free expression while maintaining our educational and research mission without disruption.

As of Monday, May 6 at 9:15 a.m., a group named ��ֱ�� Popular University for the Liberation of Palestine, or UCD PULP, began erecting at least 20 tents on the Quad, consistent with actions taken on campuses across the country.
